The winds of change are blowing in America. On November 4th, 2008, American’s around the country got out in record numbers to vote. It was the most spirited elections I have ever seen, where the candidates as well as their followers were fighting (respectfully, of course) toe to toe over issues that touch each one of us.
Both sides were passionate about how they could bring positive change to the country at a time when we all could use some positivity. The issues stemmed from the war in Iraq to Social Security reform and then turned sharply towards issues such as health care, unemployment and then recently the growing economic concerns both home and abroad. Both candidates presented their positions on how they would benefit us for the next 4 years.
When all was said and done, all of the political ad campaigns were over, and all the votes were counted, Senator Barack Obama won the Presidency hands down. In the end, exit polls showed that it was the issue over the nation's economy and who was the best choice to lead us in a future filled with so much uncertainty. Americans voted and in the end, the process worked.
November 5th came and went and we are all still here. We are all still alive and our lives weren’t drastically different because Obama won and McCain lost. Politics and often used scare tactics aside, we will be ok either way. Republican and Democrats still have a voice in the democracy that exists in this country and the future decisions that will be made.
The time now is for everyone to come together again as a nation, regardless of who the President is. This is not a sporting event. It isn’t the Tigers vs. the Indians. The results do not just sit in a box score somewhere. Our livelihoods depend on the success of whoever is in office. This is OUR country; each and every one of us and our children and their future children. We need President Elect Obama to be successful because our individual success depends upon it.
