It is hard to believe that it is already 2008. Last year went by so fast and without a doubt, 2008 won't be much slower. As a department, we saw an increase of calls for service by our citizens of 7%. When they call, we answer. Just like most fire departments, we had our share of bizarre calls and calls that tested our abilities. Did not matter the time of day, day of the week, weather conditions or what else was going on; when our citizens called, we responded.
Another positive sign of how good of a job we are doing was reflected in the recent newsletter "The Portager, January, 2008" where an article shared a recent citizen survey. In that survey, citizens reported being 97.4% satisfied with the level of service they are receiving from the fire department. That is a reflection on each and every one of us who steps on the rig each day.
This in no way means that we are "satisfied" though. We have much to do in order to improve the overall department and 2008 will once again give us that opportunity to grow and develop together. Whether it is continuing to fight the battle for increased staffing (working towards NFPA 1710) or making sure we keep our priorities in proper alignment (oh, training should be more important than inspections?!?), we won't give up the fight. As 2007 showed, when we work together we can accomplish great things.
Last but certainly not least, the close of 2007 brought with it the retirement of Captain Jim Leve. With over 23 years of service to the department serving as firefighter, captain and president of the union. Many of the benefits we enjoy today are a result of the hard work and effort that he championed. Jim also serves as the 5th District President for Michigan and will continue to serve in that capacity. His leadership will be greatly missed around the fire house.
In his place, firefighter Clay Hollister has been promoted to the position of Captain. Join me in congratulating him on this promotion and in extending the hand of assistance as he gets comfortable in his new role.
I hope you all have a great new year filled with fulfillment and joy.
Brother Rick Nason Republican at Heart!
