Well we are almost one month through 2008 already. It has been a weird year already for the good ole P F and D. We are up in number but not by much. Last year to date we had run 261 calls and in 2008 we are at 269. The odd part of the call volume comes in where the alarms have come from. Station three (retirement station) is jumping up in down with almost a 100% improvement in call volume. Yes, last year they were at 43 alarms and this year 80 so far tied with station two (the station that always picks on old guys that never do anything). Station two is holding their own with only one call short of their 2007 number to date. The other interesting thing is Central station is still the busiest, but are 31 calls down from last year 105 to date compared to 136 last year. We also have run 4 alarms outside of the city compared to only one in 2007.
The first month on 2008 we lost a retired brother who served our department with pride and joy from August 1965-December 1993 (Captain Billy Channels). It was sad to see him go, but now we know he is not suffering any longer. Even through the rough time of death, it shows how proud I am to be a firefighter and to be part of the brotherhood. We had five retired members show up to the funeral along with 27 of 31 current members all dressed up in Class A uniforms. We also had guys volunteer to do the Honor Guard with short notice at two visitations and the funeral. Many of our new member did not know him, but they still showed their pride of the brotherhood.
And we finally have a date for the big retirement party for Captain Jim Leve. The party will be held March 22, 2008 19:00-00:00 @ the Moose Lodge 9650 Portage Road, Portage, Michigan. Captain Leve served the Portage Fire Department for 23 years, 17 of those as the president of the union. He also has served and continues as the 5th District president of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union. I now know how hard Jim worked to get the benefits we now have and enjoy. Thank you so much Jim for the years of service for the fire department and the union. If you are interested in attending the party please contact us and we will get back with you.
President Rick Nason (R)
